MICHIGAN STATE POLICE URGED DRIVERS TO STAY OFF DETROIT FREEWAYS, UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The Michigan State Police is advising everyone to avoid the Metro Detroit Freeway System because of intense flooding.

MSP issued the following statement on Monday evening: Please advise your viewers, listeners or readers to avoid non essential use of the Metro Detroit Freeway system. All freeways in the Metro area are currently experiencing flooding at different points. Also remind everyone to not drive through standing water as it is hard to determine how deep the water is. MDOT will continue to update closings on its twitter page and MI Drive.

7 Action News has been fielding calls from many viewers in the Metro Detroit area who report flooding in their neighborhoods and basements.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department advises that residents on flooded residential streets in the city should clear any debris from the catch basin. If that doesn't allow the water to go down and there is a deeper blockage, call DWSD's hotline at 313-267-7401.

Both directions of I-75 at I-94 are shut down and traffic is backed up for miles.

The list of some known problem areas also include:

*Eastbound I-94 at Schaefer, right lane open only due to accident

*Northbound I-75 at I-696 closed due to an accident

* Southbound Haggerty Road from Orchard Hill Place to 8 Mile Road is closed

*Southbound M-10 at M-8 is closed
