BEWARE OF STORM CHASERS
BEWARE OF STORM CHASERS
The Northfield Police Department reminds all residents and community members to be mindful of “scammers” who prey on victims of weather related damage. Per the Better Business Bureau, Scam contractors who are “storm chasers”, promise repairs and collect fees, but fail to deliver. After a serious storm a fraudulent/scamming contractor may knock on your door with an exceptional offer, promising to begin repair work the following day. This contractor will request either an upfront payment or a signed contract authorizing them to negotiate with your insurance company on your behalf. If you sign this contract, you likely will be signing over the entire insurance check regardless of how or if the work is completed.
How should you protect yourself from “Scam” Contractors ?
Do not be pressured into making an immediate decision. Always get more than one quote.
Check references. Ask for past customers who have used the contractor within the last year. Be cautious of internet reviews, they too may be fraudulent.
Check the contractor through the Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org, read of any complaints, licensing or any government actions.
Confirm the contractor is licensed and registered to work in Michigan. Proof of a current insurance certificate from the contractors’ insurance company may also be requested.
Receive a written contract with specifics to include price, materials and timeline.
