DUI Checkpoint planned for August 29, 2014 on Campbell Avenue near the intersection of Winchester Blvd.

The Campbell Police Department will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence Checkpoint on Friday, August 29, 2014, between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am. The checkpoint location will be on Campbell Avenue near the intersection of Winchester Blvd. in Campbell.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint and looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Those caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving impaired driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Funding for this DUI checkpoint is partially provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

Sergeant Tom Rogers from the Campbell Police Department is available for additional information regarding the August 29th checkpoint. He can be reached at (408) 866-2710 or email trogers@cityofcampbell.com.
