Woman arrested after allegedly fabricating attempted murder complaint and arrest against her sister.
On August 28, Deputies were called to the Prospect residence of fifty one year old Dovie Hulsey Patterson to investigate a report of Mrs. Patterson’s sister forty six year old Renae Hulsey Campbell of Alabama assaulting and trying to kill Mrs. Patterson with a knife. During the investigation Giles County Sheriff’s Investigators was presented with facts and evidence from Mrs. Patterson for probable cause to obtain a search warrant and subsequent arrest warrant for attempted murder for Mrs. Campbell. One of the items recovered at the scene was a large hunting knife that was reportedly used in the assault. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department went to Campbell’s home with Investigators from Morgan County Alabama Sheriff’s Department.
Upon execution of the search warrant at Campbell’s residence they located evidence that supported Patterson’s claim. Campbell was arrested in Alabama where she subsequently waived extradition back to Giles County. Investigators interviewed Campbell in Alabama and she told a completely different story and said she could provide video evidence of her innocence. Once Campbell was back in Giles County Lieutenant Shane Hunter was presented with evidence that refuted Patterson’s story.
The video was from home surveillance systems at Campbell’s residence. Campbell said she installed the video system some time back after previous encounters with her sister and was afraid she would come to her home and harm her in Alabama. The video in conjunction with alarm company records showed Campbell at her home at the time of the alleged attempt on Patterson’s life.
Upon further investigation and contact with the District Attorney Campbell was released from jail immediately. In an interview with Patterson by Lieutenant Shane Hunter where he presented Patterson with the new information the department had uncovered she confessed that she had fabricated the incident. She said she was not sure why she did it but they had a long running feud in the family and that is why she moved to Tennessee some time ago.
It is believed that Patterson fabricated the while story and planted evidence and knew enough about her sister to give details of items that the investigators could find at her residence to corroborate her story. She had even cut herself several times to assist in the believability that the crime had occurred.
Mrs. Campbell was assisted by a family member who is an attorney and he was glad she had the video because the evidence against her initially was overwhelming in the amount of probable cause it presented against Campbell.
Patterson was arrested by deputies and when they went to arrest her she slammed the door on them and cursed at them and physically resisted arrest. She remains in the Giles County Jail charged with Filing a false report, fabricating/tampering with evidence and resisting arrest. Her bond is set at $34,500.
"This case was like a script from a television crime drama." said Lieutenant Hunter and he was glad Campbell had the video to back up her side of the story. Other charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
