Sheriff John Layton and Jackie Nytes, The Indianapolis Public Library CEO, Announce Peace Dove Tour
On Monday, September 15th, Marion County Sheriff John Layton and The Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes visited The Indianapolis Public Library Brightwood Branch (2435 North Sherman Drive) to kick off The Peace Dove Project Tour.
The “Peace Dove” – a custom metal sculpture made out of firearm parts was created by Ryan Feeney, an Indianapolis Firefighter and the founder of Indy Art Forge. The artwork will serve as a memorial to victims of criminal violence in Marion County. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the destruction of firearms used in the commission of crimes and supplied Feeney with the fragments of destroyed firearms to create the “Peace Dove”.
By circulating the maquette (small scale model) of the Peace Dove, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and The Indianapolis Public Library are making this powerful work of art more accessible to Marion County residents and patrons of the selected local library branches. This partnership is a continuation of the partnership between the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and The Indianapolis Public Library formed to distribute free gun locks to the community last April.
Sheriff Layton stated: “Like police stations and fire stations, public libraries are located throughout Marion County. They ensure access to education and culture to local residents, which is why the Library was such an incredible partner for the gun lock giveaway program, and now the Peace Dove Project. We are thrilled that people from all sides of town will be able to visit their local library to see this powerful work of art, and hope that it stirs excitement for the reveal of the full size Peace Dove at the Central Library.”
"This project, which is part of the Library's community-wide Stand4Peace initiative, is an opportunity for the Library to be everyone's place to come together to learn and discuss important issues and commonly shared challenges," said Jackie Nytes, Indy Library CEO. "We encourage all citizens to view the Peace Dove and join with others in our community to advance the theme of peace and understanding."
