The Rotary Club Purple Pinkie Fundraiser

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS FROM OUR FRIENDS WITH THE HURON TOWNSHIP ROTARY CLUB. THIS CAUSE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THIS WONDERFUL GROUP OF PEOPLE. PLEASE SUPPORT THEM IF YOU ARE ABLE.

Coming to Huron - The Rotary Purple Pinkie
The Huron Township Rotary Club in cooperation with
Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Polio remains a crippling disease and Rotary International has taken on the task of eradication of Polio from the planet. It is indeed controlled in the developed countries of the world but there are not many of us who do not know someone who suffered from, and indeed is still suffering from the effects of Polio. Polio is still a threat in several countries. In recognition of the threat, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has teamed with Rotary International in this hopefully last great push to total eradication.

Why Purple Pinkie? When teams of Rotarians join in support of local medical authorities to vaccinate entire villages, the children receive the drops of vaccine then their pinkies are dipped in a purple solution to show they have received the vaccine.

Huron Township Rotarians and volunteers will be in the schools on Wednesday, October 15th to do a “Purple Pinkie” donation drive. Each student or staff member who donates one dollar will receive a purple pinkie in the form of a ribbon tied to their pinkie.

Why one dollar? We ask one dollar because that is the cost to vaccinate one child. Throughout the country Rotary Clubs are joining together to make this happen. You may have seen an advertisement showing prominent people holding a thumb and finger up to show we are “This Close” to the eradication of Polio.

This is one of the projects of Huron Township Rotary’s “12 Projects in 12 Months” initiative to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the club. As always, members appreciate everyone’s support in all community service functions.
