A Message from our Animal Control officers:

Feeding Wild Geese Can Cause Angel Wing

Livermore Animal Control would like to take this time to encourage residents to refrain from feeding the ducks and geese at the Springtown duck pond.

While we understand that it is fun and relaxing to feed the birds, the thing we need to keep in mind is, although it is not considered illegal, it is very hazardous for the birds. These birds are not designed to eat a diet of bread and rice and it can cause illness and physical deformities.

The other issue is the fact that the birds become conditioned to approach cars looking for food, and they are hit by vehicles on a regular basis.

We encourage you to keep the animals’ wellbeing in mind before you decide to feed them.

There is currently a domestic goose residing at the pond that has drawn attention for her wing deformity. "Angel Wing" is a deformity that affects waterfowl such as Canada geese. One of the most common causes is feeding by humans. In a bird with this condition, the last joint in the wing is twisted. The feathers point out to the bird’s side instead of lying flat against its body. Angel wing can make it difficult or impossible for the bird to fly, which can make it unable to escape from predators. The condition is caused by a high-calorie diet that is high in protein and/or low in vitamins D and E and manganese.

The only wild waterfowl that have been known to develop "Angel Wing" are those that have been fed by humans, especially foods such as white bread. If they are fed large amounts of high-protein, high-energy foods by humans, they grow too fast. Their primary feathers can become too heavy for the carpal joint muscles to support, which can cause the tip of the wing to drop. The condition can also cause the primary flight feathers to become damaged. In an adult bird angel wing is incurable.

Wildlife experts urge the public not to feed wild waterfowl, such as geese. The birds can get the vitamins and nutrients they need for healthy development from food found in their natural environment.
