The UPD Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) at 19th & Campus helps catch a car thief! 
On 9-16-14, at 2:43 pm, a stolen 1996 Honda drove past the ALPR located at southbound Campus & 19th St. The ALPR system alerted UPD and officers responded. They located the car, still being driven, in the area of Campus & Foothill.
The suspect ditched the car and tried to flee on foot near Foothill & 2nd. UPD officers set up a perimeter and requested the assistance of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's helicopter, 40-King.
The suspect was sighted by 40-King on the grounds of Upland Jr. High School. UPD alerted both UJHS and Upland Elementary School of this so the schools could be locked down for the protection of staff and students. UPD officers converged on the suspect and took him into custody without further incident.
