The smoke is worse, but the fire fight is going well.
Although the change in winds has inundated us in heavy smoke, the up-side is that calm weather has allowed fire crews to start working on the north end of the main body of the King Fire and on the large spot near French Meadows. Air tankers built a retardant line between the north end of the fire and the south side of Mildred Ridge yesterday and today there are both hotshot crews and engine crews cutting line and reinforcing existing line with hose lays. This is good news for all of us in Squaw - containment/extinguishment of the north end of the fire would allow all of us to breathe easier (figuratively and, potentially, literally).
I was very disappointed to see that someone had posted a fabricated 'fire perimeter' map on Facebook showing spot fires very close to Alpine and Squaw Valley. Those spot fires never existed and some folks in Alpine Meadows were reportedly so rattled that they left. It's inexcusable and dangerous for someone to intentionally attempt to create fear and possibly panic, but that is apparently what was done. If you come across something like this please call us and let us know and don't believe everything you see/read on the internet!
