Green Creek Man Sentenced 71 Years to Prison
A Polk County jury found Anthony Biggs guilty in Superior Court Friday of six sexual assault charges of a minor.
Biggs 46, of Poors Ford Rd. Rutherfordton was charged with three counts of First Degree Sex Offense and three counts of Indecent Liberties with a Minor. The jury consisting of seven men and five women deliberated for four hours before returning with a verdict of guilty on all charges.
Superior Court Judge Robert T. Sumner thanked the members of the jury for their services and released them of their duties before he sentenced Biggs. Honorable Sumner sentenced Biggs to serve a minimum of 71 years in the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
Lt. Bayne who charged Biggs said, “I am thankful for the jurors who listened to the evidence and testimony and found that Biggs was in fact guilty. This gives the victim some closure where she can now start the healing process and begin to move forward.”
District Attorney Gregg Newman who prosecuted the case and is making it known that if you are going to commit sexual assaults, you’re going to be prosecuted to the maximum. The Grand Jury handed down indictments on Monday against five more defendants who have been charged in Polk County for a sexual assault offense.
Sheriff Hill thanked his staff, the District Attorney’s Office, and jurors for giving this victim justice. Hill said, “Today is a great day. Polk County citizens should feel a little more relieved that another sex offender is off the streets and he got what he deserves.
Biggs will be transferred to North Carolina Department of Prisons in Statesville where he will begin serving his term.
