Elkhart Police Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting
Elkhart County – At the request of the Elkhart City Police Department the Indiana State Police are investigating a shooting that involved officers tonight in Elkhart City. As part of the department’s protocol an outside agency was called in to complete the investigation.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. this evening Elkhart City Police officers were in the area of 403 Chapman attempting to locate a subject wanted on a felony warrant. Upon arriving a foot pursuit ensued between officers and a white male subject. Elkhart City officers chased the subject west bound on foot from the apartment through the complex for nearly one block. The subject was shot by police after the man pointed a gun at the officers.
No officers were injured in the shooting. However, the suspect died as a result of the police gunfire. The subject has been positively identified by family members on scene through photographs. However, his name will not be released until immediate members of his family are contacted.
State police detectives are currently on scene interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 48 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department.
