TELEPHONE SCAMS ON THE RISE IN THE CRESCENTA VALLEY AREA
TELEPHONE SCAMS ON THE RISE IN THE CRESCENTA VALLEY AREA
Crescenta Valley Station is experiencing an increased number of telephone scams involving pre-paid “Green Dot” and other various pre-paid debit and credit cards.
The suspects are mostly targeting elderly residents by calling them and posing as the IRS, lottery officials and/or law enforcement officials stating they owe money, won money or they need to post bail for a relative in custody. The suspects will instruct the victim to go to a local store to purchase pre-paid credit/debit cards in an exact amount to satisfy the debt and to call them back with the pre-paid card numbers.
Once the suspects have the pre-paid card numbers, they immediately transfer the money to another pre-paid card before the victim realizes they have been scammed.
It is important for the community to understand that government officials do not demand payments from pre-paid cards over the telephone.
For further information please contact Crescenta Valley Station Detective Rodger Burt at (818) 248-3464.
