Beware of the “Kindness of Strangers Scam”

Panhandlers have been using a new ruse to collect money that preys upon the decency of others. The scam involves soliciting donations for a recently deceased infant’s funeral. Pico Rivera Station deputies have detained and cited several individuals for this scam along Whittier Boulevard near Rosemead Boulevard. Deputies have discovered that those involved have been using the money to pay for motel rooms in the area. This scam involves multiple groups of people and the “deceased infant” does not exist.
