CAMPUS ADVISORY UPDATE 10/21/14
Mr. Lemus was arraigned today in Torrance Court. He entered a plea of “not guilty”. During the arraignment, El Camino College Police Chief Trevis requested consideration for a bail enhancement. The bail enhancement request was granted. New bail is set for $1.2 million.
In addition, the judge ordered the protective order for Mr. Lemus to stay away from the El Camino College campus for a distance of 1,000 yards. This is an increase of the previous protective order of 100 yards.
A preliminary hearing date has been set for November 4, 2014, at 8:30 am in Torrance Court.
Mr. Lemus is still in custody at the Los Angeles County Jail. LA County Jail will notify the ECC Police Department prior to Mr. Lemus being released from custody. We will continue to provide updates as we receive any new information.
Please be advised of the following practice Campus Police utilizes regarding any incident when a suspect who has made threats of violence toward the campus community is released from custody:
1. Alert campus community via various means as soon as possible, including providing the individual’s name and photo.
2. Use all available resources to protect the campus.
3. Proactively continue to monitor the suspect’s actions, such as social media.
What students and employees should do if you see the suspect:
1. Call Campus Police immediately. This allows for Campus Police to verify the sighting, and respond accordingly. Notifications may include a Campus Advisory via Nixle, email and other available means. If deemed necessary, Campus Police will advise you to shelter in place, lock down, or provide police escorted evacuation options.
2. Campus Police will keep students and employees informed throughout the process based upon available information.
3. If you see something, say something. By working together we all contribute to the safety of our college campus.

Campus Police has been utilizing a great emergency notification service for over one year. However, in order to receive these emergency notifications you must sign up. Nixle is a free service that keeps you informed with campus and community safety alerts. Through this system, you will receive messages instantly via cell phone text message and/or email. Important Safety Reminders
§ Have keys in hand before walking to your car. Walk in well-lit areas at night.
§ Always be aware of your surroundings – remember the use of electronic music- listening devices and cell phones may significantly distract you.
§ Don’t walk alone – use the buddy system. Avoid being in buildings alone.
§ Use the ECC Courtesy Shuttle operated by Campus Police from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; on-call 24 hrs. Call Campus Police 310-660-3100 or use a “Code Blue” phone.
§ In an emergency, dial 9-1-1 from a landline phone, 310-660-3100 from a cell phone, or use a campus “Code Blue” emergency phone.
§ Night students and faculty are encouraged to park in the same general area as other faculty or students with night classes in their building; this provides the opportunity for a group of students and faculty to walk to their cars after dark.
§ Immediately report any suspicious activity to campus police.
