Railroad Crossing Updates at Allen and Wabash Nearing Completion

The recent updates by Norfolk Southern Railroad, in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Transportation, to the signals and crossing gates in the area of Allen and Wabash are nearing completion. The signals and gates have been upgraded, and in some cases repositioned. The most significant change in configuration at the crossings is the repositioning of the crossing gate that used to be at the main Norfolk and Southern tracks on Allen Road. That gate has been relocated back and positioned in front of the connector track on Allen Road southeast of Wabash. There was previously no gate on Allen Road at that location, only a signal. The two gates on Allen Rd will now activate when a train is on either the main line or the connector. When the Allen Rd. gates are down, a train could be on either the connector or the main tracks. The gate that was previously positioned on Allen Road in front of the main Norfolk and Southern tracks for traffic proceeding toward Wabash from the southeast has been removed.

State law requires motorists to stop at a train crossing gate and/or signal when activated. Proceeding around an activated gate or driving through an activated signal is not only dangerous, but violates state law and will subject the offender to a traffic citation.
