Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Morley woman and a Sikeston man in custody.

BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Morley woman and a Sikeston man in custody.

Patty Lynn Tanner (59) of 358 Ault Street, Morley, Missouri has been charged with the Class C Felony of Possession of a Controlled Substance (195.202 RSMo), and the Class A Misdemeanor of Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia (195.233 RSMo).

Rollen D. Newsom (38) of 108 Comstock, Sikeston, Missouri was arrested on an outstanding Scott County warrant for the Class B Felony of Distribution / Delivery / Manufacture / Produce or Attempt to or Possess With Intent to Distribute / Deliver / Manufacture / Produce a Controlled Substance (195.211 RSMo) and the Class D Felony of Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia (195.233 RSMo).

Sheriff Walter states that on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at approximately 8:50 a.m., Senior Deputy Matt Scroggins responded to a report of suspicious activity at 358 Ault Street, Morley. Deputies with the sheriff’s office had been to the residence on the night of October 20th and arrested two people. The sheriff’s office had received a report that someone was possibly illegally taking items from the residence.

Deputy Scroggins made contact with Tanner who stated she was moving her belongings from the residence. The deputy asked Tanner if anyone else was at the residence. Tanner stated several times that nobody else was inside. Deputy Scroggins asked for and received permission to search the residence. During the search, a known fugitive, Newsom, was located hiding in a bedroom of the residence. Newsome was arrested. Tanner claimed she did not know Newsom was in the residence.

Tanner consented to a search of her vehicle. Deputy Scroggins located a box in the vehicle that was secured with a combination lock. Tanner stated the box belonged to her, gave Deputy Scroggins permission to look inside, and provided the combination to open it. Items known to be used as drug paraphernalia, several straws and plastic baggies were located inside the box. Tanner was arrested. Both Tanner and Newsom were transported to the Scott County Jail.

Sheriff Walter lauds Deputy Scroggins for his work on this investigation. The deputy was aware of the previous arrests made for drug violations at the residence. He was also aware that deputies had received information that a wanted fugitive was known to be hiding there. Being assertive made the difference between a simple contact to verify the lawful activity of someone moving, and the discovery of a wanted person and illegal drug activity.

The sheriff asks that anyone who has information regarding this investigation, other drug activity, or any other crime, to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.

Tanner and Newsom remain in custody in the Scott County Jail.

Bond has been set by the court for Tanner at $5,000.00 cash or surety.

Bond for Newsom on the outstanding warrant was set by the court at $25,000.00 cash or surety.
