BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Scott City man in custody on charges stemming from a pursuit.
Matthew Angel Lowe (38) of 1501 Broadway, Scott City, Missouri has been charged with the Class D Felony of Driving While Revoked/Suspended, the Class D Felony of Resisting Arrest by Fleeing and Creating a Substantial Risk of Serious Injury or Death to any Person, the Class B Misdemeanor of Operating a Motor Vehicle in a Careless and Imprudent Manner, the Class C Misdemeanor of Fail to Drive on the Right Half of the Roadway when the Roadway was of Sufficient Width, the Class B Misdemeanor of Exceeding the Posted Speed Limit by 25 Miles an Hour or More, and the Class C Misdemeanor of Fail to Stop for a Stop Sign.
Sheriff Walter states that on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at approximately 1:34 a.m., Deputy John Caudle was operating radar on State Highway M at Wheeler Drive in Scott City, Missouri. Deputy Caudle observed a vehicle traveling west that appeared to be driving faster than the posted 35 mile per hour speed limit, at 73 miles per hour.
Deputy Caudle activated his patrol vehicle lights and siren attempting to stop the speeding vehicle. The vehicle, a white Pontiac Firebird, failed to yield to the deputy, and drove even faster at 105 miles per hour on Route M between Scott City and Chaffee. The vehicle crossed the center line and drove in the wrong lane several times during the pursuit. Deputy Caudle continued to pursue the vehicle which entered Chaffee going 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour speed zone. The vehicle failed to stop at the 4-way stop sign in Chaffee at the intersection of Route M (North Main) and Route A (Yoakum Avenue) with the vehicle sliding sideways. The vehicle then headed east on Route A toward New Hamburg. The vehicle continued to flee at speeds of 95 miles per hour between Chaffee and New Hamburg, then drove 70 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour speed zone in New Hamburg. The vehicle failed to stop for another stop sign on Route A and headed back east toward U.S. Highway 61. The vehicle failed to stop for yet another stop sign at Route A and Highway 61 and headed north on Highway 61. The vehicle was exceeding the posted 55 mile per hour speed limit at 105 miles per hour as it sped north on Highway 61.
Sheriff Walter states that the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with stopping the vehicle south of Kelso on Highway 61 by deploying spike strips. The vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the roadway near 27823 U.S. Highway 61.
The driver, Matthew Lowe, exited the vehicle and ran west behind a residence. Lowe was chased and ignored commands to stop. He ran for some distance and finally halted in a cow pasture, cursed, and implored the deputy to shoot him. Lowe was taken into custody without a struggle. He stated he ran because it was a rush and his driver’s license was revoked. Low was transported to the Scott County Jail.
Sheriff Walter stated that Deputy Caudle did an excellent job during the pursuit as did the communications personnel handling the radio traffic during the pursuit. The sheriff also thanks the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their assistance in getting the vehicle stopped.
The sheriff asks that anyone who has information regarding this matter or any other crime, to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.
