Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a man in custody has been charged with the assault of a corrections officer.

BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Sikeston man in custody at the county jail has been charged with the assault of a corrections officer.

Terriante Maurice McClinton (23) of 412 Cole, Sikeston, Missouri has been charged with the Class C Felony of Assault of a Corrections Officer, and the Class B Misdemeanor of Property Damage in the Second Degree.

Sheriff Walter states that McClinton was already in custody at the Scott County Jail, waiting to be transported to the Missouri Department of Corrections, when on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at approximately 9:14 p.m., Sergeant Brant Pratt was called to the jail to investigate the assault.

According to the investigation by Sergeant Pratt, Corrections Officer Sierra Sides and Corrections Officer Kindal McCall were performing their duties in one of the jail housing pods. CO Sides was speaking with McClinton, an inmate in the facility, when the inmate struck the side of the officer’s face, grabbing her prescription glasses, and purposefully bent them until broken.

Sergeant Pratt observed a contusion and swelling to the left upper side of the corrections officer’s face. CO Sides was transported to the Missouri Delta Medical Center where she was treated and released.

When asked by Sergeant Pratt if he was willing to discuss the incident, McClinton stated “No, it won’t do me any good.”

Sheriff Walter states that he is proud of the professional way the corrections staff, and especially Corrections Officer Sides handled the incident. The sheriff states that the field of corrections is probably the most under-appreciated career field in law enforcement, and a very dangerous job. The Scott County Jail is a 120 bed facility and the jail staff must interact face to face with the inmates on a regular recurring basis.

The sheriff asks that anyone who has information regarding any crime, to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.

Bond for McClinton on the new charges has been set by the court at $15,000.00 cash only.
