DANGER WARNING: THIN ICE AT RUTH POND
DANGER WARNING: THIN ICE AT RUTH POND
As winter arrives in Valdez, the Valdez Police Department and City of Valdez reminds residents to stay safe and avoid walking on Ruth Pond. At this point in the season, the pond is not completely frozen and serious danger exists of falling through the ice.
Cold water exposure and entrapment under the ice can lead to hypothermia and drowning, even in smaller bodies of water like the pond.
Parents and guardians are asked to remind children of the dangers of playing around the pond during winter months. All ice covered bodies of water should be considered dangerous unless officially approved for winter use.
The State of Alaska Division of Parks and Recreation developed an outstanding short film aimed at educating Alaskans, and most specifically teens, regarding cold water immersion. To view the video, visit: http://vimeo.com/98757977
