LPD's Gang Unit was active on Friday.
LPD has a five member Gang Unit made up of four officers and one sergeant. Currently the Gang Unit is a supplemental assignment, meaning it is not the officers' primary assignment. All of the Gang Unit personnels' primary assignments are to Patrol.
The Gang Unit comes together a few days each month to work as a team. They conduct probation and parole compliance checks on known gang members, follow up on crimes committed by gang members, provide education efforts, and conduct proactive enforcement efforts targeting gang members and those that associate with gangs. All of the members of the Gang Unit work on gang suppression issues during their regular patrol assignments as well.
The Gang Unit was working on Friday November 7th.
During a probation search of a juvenile norteno gang member, they found graffiti behind his home. Some are innocent tags with no connection to gang activity, but there was both norteno and sureno gang graffiti mixed in.
The Unit made several traffic enforcement stops including one that led to a call for a drug sniffing K9 from Pleasanton PD to help search a known drug dealer that they had stopped.
The Gang Unit contacted numerous subjects during their shift and recovered one loaded handgun from a violent gang member.
The ongoing efforts of the Gang Unit are part of LPD's commitment to ensuring a high quality of life in Livermore.
