Recent Accidents Highlight Need for Properly Installing Car Seats

Over the past several weeks, both Riley and Honey Creek Fire Departments have responded to several motor vehicle accidents involving children in car seats. Thankfully, due to correct installation and usage of the car seats none of the children have experienced life threatening injuries. According to Safe Kids Worldwide approximately 75% of all car seats are misused in some manner. Improper use of a child safety seat can result in severe and life threatening injuries or death. With motor vehicle accidents continuing to be the leading cause of death in children, parents and caregivers need to ensure they are installing and using their car seats in the correct way.

Fortunately, there are several Permanent Fitting Stations located in and around Vigo County. For the past several years, Riley and Honey Creek Fire Departments have partnered together to protect Hoosier children while traveling on our nation’s highways. Both departments have established a child safety seat inspection station during normal business hours. This child safety seat inspection station is staffed by several nationally certified child passenger safety technicians who will inspect your car seats and instruct families on how to properly secure them in their vehicles. Parents and caregivers can call either the Riley Fire Department at 812-894-3610 or Honey Creek Fire Department at 812-299-2244 to schedule an appointment to have their car seat installation checked. Also, adults will be provided material and instruction on proper child passenger safety and car seat installation.

This program is funded by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute with technical support provided by the Automotive Safety Program, Indiana University School of Medicine. For more information, call toll free at 800-KID-N-CAR, or visit the program’s website at www.preventinjury.org.
