Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a man in custody for charges relating to a domestic violence incident.

BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Sikeston area man in custody for charges relating to a domestic violence incident.

Joshua Dwane Powell (23) of 1774 County Highway 405, Sikeston, Missouri has been charged with the Class C Felony of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

Sheriff Walter states that on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Deputy Danny Finley and Corporal Justin Wooten were dispatched to 1774 County Highway 405 in Scott County for a delayed report of a domestic assault.

Deputy Finley made contact with the female victim, identified as the fiancé of Powell. According to the victim, she was assaulted by Powell and locked in a storage shed on November 9th. Deputy Finley observed a small laceration under the victim’s left eye with slight bruising.

Corporal Wooten spoke with Powell about the allegations. Powell stated that there was a physical altercation on the day in question. He stated that during the fight he pushed the victim to the ground and that is when she sustained her injuries. Powell stated that he was defending himself and had been struck in the face several times. Powell stated he was not injured, and Corporal Wooten saw no visible signs of injury.

Powell was arrested by Corporal Wooten and transported to the Scott County Jail pending the filing of formal charges by the prosecutor.

Deputy Finley then entered the residence with the victim. The deputy observed two firearms. Those firearms were identified by Powell as his. He stated they were heirlooms from a deceased uncle. The firearms were seized by Deputy Finley as Powell is prohibited by law to possess them.

Deputy Finley next asked the victim to provide a written statement. The victim refused to cooperate further in the matter and stated she did not wish to press charges.

Sheriff Walter commends the deputies for their arrest. The sheriff states that this is another example of a domestic situation ending in an arrest that could have been prevented. Sheriff Walter asks that anyone who has information regarding this case, crimes of this type, or any other crimes to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.

Powell remains in custody at the Scott County Jail. Bond has been set by the court at $10,000.00 cash or surety.
