Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reminds everyone to practice winter driving safety.
BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reminds motor vehicle operators that Missouri Law requires drivers to turn on their vehicle headlights any time the windshield wipers are used, even if intermittent. Headlights are also required during periods of fog or other inclement weather.
The sheriff states that winter weather is upon us and that everyone should check their tire pressure during cold weather. Also, get a vehicle winter maintenance check-up; battery, belts, hoses, radiator, lights, brakes, heater/defroster and wipers. Keep your fuel tank full, and try not to let it fall below half a tank on winter trips.
Sheriff Walter says you should also consider placing a few safety items in your vehicle. Good items to have are a flashlight, batteries, blanket, snacks, water, gloves, boots, first-aid kit, ice scraper/snowbrush, jumper cables, and road flares/reflectors.
Sheriff Walter states that the best planned trip can go wrong. Being prepared for emergencies may save your life or that of a loved one.
Sheriff Walter states that every winter, his deputies spend many dangerous hours running down reports of stranded motorist and motor vehicle accidents that could be prevented. It is always best to err on the side of caution, and when bad weather occurs, stay at home unless you absolutely have to get out.
