Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Sikeston area man in custody for drug charges.

BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports a Sikeston area man in custody for drug charges.

Matthew Dwight Simms (25) of 158 County Highway 449, Sikeston, Missouri has been charged with the Class B Felony of Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Distribute, and the Class A Misdemeanor of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Sheriff Walter states that on Monday, November 24th, at approximately 1:05 a.m., Sergeant Charles Pratt, Senior Deputy Matt Scroggins, Deputy Carl Rose, and Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) Trooper Blake Wunderlich went to 158 County Highway 449, Sikeston after receiving information that Simms could be found there.

Simms had an active Grand Jury Indictment Warrant for the Class B Felony of Trafficking in Drugs in the Second Degree, the Class C Felony of Possession of a Controlled Substance, and the Class A Misdemeanor of Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia.

Those charges stemmed from an investigation conducted by Deputy Robyn Merideth responding to a suspicious vehicle call at 20182 U.S. Highway 61, Sikeston on October 13, 2014.

While investigating the suspicious vehicle, a red 2010 Toyota Corolla parked and unoccupied in the complainant’s driveway, Merideth observed apparent drug paraphernalia in plain view inside the vehicle. That vehicle was towed and a search warrant was issued. On execution of the warrant, 35 grams of methamphetamine in four individual plastic bags, a bag of marijuana, two pills identified as Xanax, scales, and other paraphernalia was found inside the car. Further investigation determined that Simms was driving the Corolla when it was abandoned in the driveway.

Sheriff Walter states that when the deputies and trooper arrived at the County Highway 449 residence they were given permission to enter and search. Simms was located in a bedroom of the home and arrested. Also located in the bedroom was a backpack identified by Simms as belonging to him. The backpack contained six plastic bags of a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, with a total weight of 17 grams. Also found in the pack were more plastic bags, and digital scales. Located in the room were two glass pipes with white residue, an aluminum pipe with white residue, and other items associated with using methamphetamine. The residue on each item field tested positive for methamphetamine. Simms was transported to the Scott County Jail.

Sheriff Walter commends all of the deputies involved in both investigations and the arrest of Simms. The sheriff thanks Trooper Wunderlich and the MSHP for their assistance. Sheriff Walter asks that anyone who has further information regarding Simms, other drug violations, or any other criminal activity to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.

Simms remains in custody in the Scott County Jail. Bond on the Grand Jury Indictment was set by the court at $25,000.00 cash or surety. Bond on the new warrant was set by the court at $50,000.00 cash only.
