Phone scams increase near Christmas, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

Unfortunately as we get closer to the Christmas Holiday season there are people that try to prey on others good nature and attempt to take advantage of that by various cons and scams. Among the most prevalent ones lately are the fake Publishers Clearinghouse one. A person calls you and says they are with Publishers Clearinghouse and you've just won a brand new car, or a large amount of money, and that all you have to do is pay the taxes on it and they will deliver the car or check or whatever other "prize" they say you've won, you just need to go to your bank and send them money to cover the taxes and fees. This is a bogus call, the real Publishers Clearinghouse will never contact you by phone if you win something from them. These calls are usually perpetrated by people preying on the elderly and often times originate from callers in another state making it almost impossible to track down and prosecute. Another common one that is making the rounds again this year is one where someone contacts you pretending to be a friend or distant relative stating they are in jail in a foreign country and need bail money wired or something "bad" is going to happen to them. Sadly these types of calls occur more frequently this time of year and almost always target elderly citizens. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is, and just hang up. If you receive a call about some type of transaction that your not sure about you can always call the police department or your local bank for help and/or more information.
