WARNING: Telephone/E-Mail Fraud
Several residents have received phone calls and/or voice messages from an individual who identifies himself as being from the IRS. The individual has a foreign dialect. On the voice messages the individual leaves a call back number of (206) 317-1741. The individual in one case informed the resident that they owed $5,800.00 in back taxes and attempted to collect that amount from the person. The resident was aware it was a scam and hung up.
The Mercersburg Police Department would like to warn all residents no to give personal information to anyone over the telephone. If you receive a call similar to this notify the police department that covers your area. If you live in the Borough of Mercersburg notify the Mercersburg Police Department at (717) 328-2221. If you live in Montgomery, Peters, or Warren Township notify the Pennsylvania State Police at Chambersburg, PA at (717) 264-5161.
Another scam going around on the Internet is that you will receive an e-mail from a company that you do business with. The e-mail will state your bill is overdue or they have been trying to contact you or they will advise to create a new password to their website by putting in your current password. The e-mail message contains a link to their website. However, when you click on the link, it will direct you to a fraudulent website that looks like the company web-site. Personal information is requested from you. DO NOT RESPOND BY GIVING THE REQUESTED INFORMATION. Call the company at a phone number you know is the company number and provide them the information regarding the e-mail request. They will be able to inform you if the e-mail is fraudulent.
