Female Inmates Decorate Marion County Sheriff's Office Christmas Tree, Children's Gifts Await Santa
Sheriff John Layton invited a select group of female Jail inmates to help decorate the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. It is the third year for this holiday tradition.
“Decorating a Christmas tree means so much to the female inmates who are selected to participate. A majority of our female inmates are mothers, and we want to emphasize the meaning of the holiday spirit – the spirit of giving, of compassion, of love – inside the walls of our Jail, so better choices can be made upon their release. I am incredibly grateful to Jakks Pacific, the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee, who so generously donated the toys and teddy bears under the tree,” said Sheriff Layton.
The five inmates reminisced about favorite Christmas memories and traditions while they decorated the Christmas tree, hung ornaments, bows, and placed toys and teddy bears under the tree. The gifts and teddy bears will be given to children in need, and to the children who visit the Marion County Jail.
This year, Jakks Pacific and the Indiana Pacers chose the Marion County Sheriff’s Office as the recipient of 400 toys to distribute to the boys and girls that they serve. Hundreds of teddy bears are donated each year to public safety agencies by the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee.
