A 2008 Honda Accord (Similar to the one in the photo) was stolen from the street on the 4100 block of N. Ardmore Ave. at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Monday 12/8. The vehicle was left unattended with the keys in the ignition.
The Shorewood Police Department cannot stress enough the importance of removing keys from parked vehicles and locking them up. It only takes a matter of seconds for someone to hop in and drive it away.
As the winter months linger on, people should not leave keys in running vehicles as they wait for them to warm up on cold days.
Running cars often become stolen cars, as there are groups of car thieves who will case suburban neighborhoods looking for an easy vehicle take.
People with remote engine starters should be fine but police advise those without such devices to make sure they don't leave their running vehicles unattended, even if they're parked in driveways.
A motor vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and 40 to 50 percent of those thefts are due to driver error, including keys that are left inside vehicles.
