Advisory

NEW MOPED LAWS EFFECTIVE ON JANUARY 1, 2015

The Noblesville Police Department would like to remind its residents to the changes in the moped law effective January 1st. Mopeds are being categorized into the two sections below:

Class “A” Motor Driven Cycle
- Has a seat or saddle for the use of the rider
- Is designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground
- Complies with applicable motor vehicle equipment requirements under IC 9-19 and 49 CFR 571
- Is registered as a Class A motor driven cycle under IC 9-18.
This term does not include an electric personal assistive mobility device.

Class “B” Motor Driven Cycle
- Has a seat or saddle for the use of the rider
- Is designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground
- Complies with applicable motor vehicle equipment requirements under IC 9-19 and 49 CFR 571
- Has a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50CC’s
- Is registered as a Class B motor driven cycle under IC 9-18.
This term does not include an electric personal assistive mobility device.

Regardless of which class your motor driven cycle (“moped”) falls under, they now MUST BE REGISTERED WITH THE BEAURU OF MOTOR VEHICLES. However, mopeds do NOT need to be titled.

Class “A” Motor Driven Cycles must be operated by a valid driver with a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle endorsement with a Class “A” motor driven cycle restriction. Class “A” Motor Driven Cycles must also have proof of financial responsibilities.

Class “B” Motor Driven Cycles must be operated by an individual with an UNEXPIRED identification card with a Class “B” Motor Driven Cycle Endorsement OR a valid driver’s license.

We know that this is a lot of information to take in, but these will be the new traffic laws for “mopeds” starting January 1st and will be enforced as stated above.
