Spencer County: A wrong way drunk driver in Spencer County was arrested late Christmas Eve after a State Trooper observed him nearly have a head-on collision.
Around 10:03 P.M. on Christmas Eve, Trooper Jason Dunsworth was completing a traffic stop on US 231 as a motorist stopped to inform him that he had just observed a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane. US 231 in Spencer County is a four-lane divided highway. Trooper Dunsworth immediately began traveling south with his emergency lights activated to attempt to locate and stop the vehicle.
While traveling south in the southbound lane, Trooper Dunsworth observed a white Ford passenger car traveling south in the northbound lane meet and drive past a northbound vehicle. Trooper Dunsworth caught the vehicle at County Road 1200 North (north of Chrisney), and stopped the vehicle.
Through his investigation, Trooper Dunsworth determined that the driver, Zachary V. Flood, 29, Hardinsburg, KY, had been traveling southbound in the northbound lane since leaving Denny’s restaurant, which is just south of Interstate 64. Trooper Dunsworth also determined that Flood had been driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages. Flood was arrested and transported to the Spencer County Jail.
Trooper Dunsworth was assisted by the Dale Police Department and the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving while intoxicated and the hazards that other motorists are exposed to when drivers make poor choices.
