Temperatures in Pasadena are expected to dip into the low 30's during the early morning hours of January 1st, 2015 and it is important to take appropriate precautions to avoid potentially life-threatening cold-related illnesses.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning from 1:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. on New Year's Day indicating temperatures between 29-32 degrees for two or more consecutive hours are imminent, especially along the route of the Rose Parade where many will be camping out overnight. The previous record low temperature for the Rose Parade was 32 degrees in 1952 and the National Weather Service says this record could be tied or broken tomorrow.

Any individuals who plan to spend time outdoors during the evening should abide by the following safety tips:

• Wear several layers of clothing to prevent hypothermia or frostbite.
• Cover your head covered and entire body dry to prevent the loss of body heat.
• Drink warm fluids and avoid any alcoholic beverages.
• Stay nourished: in addition to just fluids, be sure to eat full meals and bring snacks if camping out overnight.
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of hypothermia: shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss and slurred speech can all indicate the onset of severe weather-related illnesses that require immediate medical attention.
• Stay active and move around in order to maintain a warm body temperature.
• Consider bringing foot or hand warmers to use throughout the evening.
• Watch for wet or slippery surfaces when walking around the Parade route and come prepared with sturdy shoes that have good traction.
• Small portable, professionally manufactured heaters are allowed along the Parade route - bonfires are not permitted and will be extinguished.
• Do not bring pets or small children to camp out along the route.
