On Sunday, January 4, 2015, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau began patrolling the San Gabriel Canyon Off-Highway Vehicle Area. The 160 acre Off-Highway Area is located 11 miles north of Azusa on Highway 39 and is managed by the United States Forest Service. Due the area’s remote location and popularity, the Sheriff’s Department was called in to assist the Forest Service in the enforcement of the local laws and rules of the facility. There are times during the summer months when the Forest Service has to stop allowing people in order to avoid overcrowding.
The deputies patrol the area in Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV) equipped with emergency lights and siren similar to that of a regular patrol vehicle. Sunday was a fairly quiet day by U.S. Forest Service standards but deputies made numerous warnings regarding small violations and issued one citation for an unregistered motorcycle without a spark arrester.
