ADVISORY: TELEPHPONE SCAM ALERT
It’s come to our attention that an individual or individuals is making calls to local residents, representing themselves as officers or detectives from the Howell Police Department or other local law enforcement agencies. Sometimes they identify themselves as being from the “Warrant Division”. The caller advises that there is a warrant for the persons’ arrest, and that they must immediately send money, usually requesting the resident immediately get a money order or green dot money card. They have in the past identified themselves as “Officer Delaware” or “Detective Harris”. They can be very persuasive and convincing while at other times are aggressive and demanding.
Please be aware that no one from the Howell Police Department would ever make such a phone call requesting money.
Residents are advised to never give out any personal or financial information over the phone to someone you don’t know. If you suspect that something is not right, hang up and make direct contact with the institution they claim to represent to determine the validity of the call.
If you have any questions or concerns about being a victim of this scam, please contact your local police department, or call 911 to make a police report.
