Mail & Internet Scams
During this tax filing and refund season, fraudulent mail and internet scams will increase. At any given time, there are literally hundreds of scams circulating. Please be alert and very cautious. Always assume it is a scam and then verify. NEVER SEND MONEY TO RECEIVE MONEY. NEVER give your personal or financial information to anyone if you did not initiate the phone call or already have legitimate knowledge of the circumstance or event. Protect your identity!
Most scams are being operated from foreign companies utilizing ghost addresses and phone numbers from the United States. This makes it extremely difficult to impossible to recover stolen funds and to prosecute the individuals involved. CPD will be glad to attempt to verify the legitimacy of correspondence you receive, however, the best practice is to hang up on individuals that call you and destroy mail that you receive.
