It is the beginning of tax season, and we've recently been inundated with phone calls regarding the IRS telephone scam. Individuals will call and claim to be members of the IRS, demanding that you pay owed taxes with a prepaid debit card or else law enforcement will be sent to your house.
These calls are NOT legitimate. Do not follow the instructions of these individuals. Hang up and contact the Tax Inspector General for Tax Administration's office at 1-800-366-4484 or report it through their website at http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml.
