SAN BERNARDINO HIGH SCHOOL HOSTING LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING

Community members should remain calm if they notice an increased police presence at or near San Bernardino High School tomorrow Thursday, January 29.

Local law enforcement and San Bernardino High’s public safety academy students will be participating in an active shooter training session January 29. Active shooter simulations create situations similar to what might occur if one or more armed individuals attacked a public location.

The training session will include presentations and hands-on training for both law enforcement officers and public safety academy students. To ensure safety while making the training as realistic as possible, participants will use props, realistic-looking fake guns, and audio tracks that broadcast the sound of gunfire.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department is asking for the community’s cooperation and understanding during the active shooter training. While those living and working near San Bernardino High may hear the sounds of gunfire and see emergency response vehicles, the public is not in any danger from the training.

“This is an opportunity for us to prepare for a situation we hope never occurs,” said District Police Sgt. Hector Moncada. “It is also a chance for students to experience something close to the real-life law enforcement situations in a safe setting.”

Public safety academy students take elective courses that prepare them for careers in law enforcement and emergency response, including careers as police officers and firefighters. The active shooter training will provide students with a chance to interact directly with local law enforcement officers.

The event is part of the continuing linked-learning efforts of SBCUSD. Linked learning provides hands-on opportunities for students to apply classroom instruction to real-world problems.
