Lewsville Police warns of a telephone scam

Lewisville Police Department advises that citizens should be aware of a scam occurring in the area.

A caller identifying himself as “Lieutenant Reid” or “Collins” of the Flower Mound Police Department tells potential victims that they have outstanding traffic warrants that must be paid immediately to avoid being arrested. He then instructs the victims to load funds onto a Reloadit card, and call him back with the card numbers. These types of cards are reloadable debit cards and providing card information allows the scammer to withdraw the pre-loaded funds.

This is an all too common type of scam these days, with callers impersonating law enforcement, IRS, Immigration services, and utility companies, threatening a dire consequence if payment is not made immediately.

Please be aware that legitimate businesses will not demand payment in this fashion and police warrants are typically paid directly to the local Municipal Court. Never give credit or debit card information to someone over the phone. If in doubt, call the agency or company in question, using a number from a reliable source and not one supplied by the caller, and ask a few questions. A few moments of skepticism could save a lot of money and stress.
