2015 Citizen’s Police Academy Enrollment Open to Public

Local law enforcement agencies will begin their 2015 Citizen’s Police Academy on February 26, 2015. Residents interested in attending are encouraged to enroll while space is available.

The unique academy provides a 12-week course that is designed to provide training and hands-on knowledge into criminal investigative processes and law enforcement procedures. The academy is typically attended by residents interested in learning more about how their local Police Departments operate. Attendees will also be educated about challenges and risks that law enforcement officer’s encounter on a daily basis as they work to safeguard our community.

This hands-on academy will run for 12 consecutive weeks and be conducted in two hour sessions and will include instruction from Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Fe City Police and New Mexico State Police. Course subjects will include:

• Use of Force
• SWAT and K-9 Training
• CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)
• Decisional Shooting
• Police Driving Techniques
• Domestic Violence
• Internet Crimes
• Prison and Street Gangs
• Departmental History

Course study will cover finger printing, forensic investigation techniques and a K-9 officer and police dog will demonstrate their expertise. During the Use of Force and Decisional Shooting lesson, participants will experience a virtual scenario inside a shooting simulator, which establishes a “real life” situation that provides the individual an event to make a spit second decision.

Participants will also have the opportunity for a ride along with a police officer to get an insider perspective of the areas they patrol. Individuals will learn about police driving techniques and have an opportunity to drive on a police driving obstacle course.

The overall purpose of this program is to develop a positive relationship between the police and community members through education. The program is intended to foster responsible, well-versed citizens with a knowledge base that will positively affect public safety in our community. Participants will be encouraged to provide ideas for solutions to problems facing our community and law enforcement.

Applications are now available for the next academy beginning February 26, 2015. Sessions are held Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. and will be conducted at the main Santa Fe Police Station located at 2515 Camino Entrada.

A background check will be completed on applicants and various waivers will need to be signed. A $45 application fee will be charged. Meals will be provided and graduates will receive a certificate of completion and polo shirt.
