BPD FRAUD ALERT - TEXT MESSAGE SCAM
The Brentwood Police Department received information regarding a fraudulent scheme targeting unsuspecting victims via text message. The text message generally claims the recipients bank account or debit card has been temporarily suspended or locked with instructions to call a particular number. When dialed, the caller is asked to provide personal information such as their name, address, debit card number, expiration date and three digit verification code. If successful, this information is then used to perform fraudulent transactions.
As a reminder, legitimate banks and professional organizations will generally never ask for personal information by text message or email. To avoid becoming a victim, do not respond to these messages and notify your bank directly to address any concerns. If you feel you have been a victim of this type of fraud, please notify your local law enforcement agency.
