Advisory

SCAM ALERT: Persons posing as Consumers Electric trying to collect money to avoid shut off of utilities.

The Marshall Police Department has received several complaints of a scam being perpetrated in the City. The victim will receive a phone call, with the suspect stating that they are from Consumers Electric and they have a Shut-off Notice for the victims electricity. They claim they have a work crew on the way, but if you will make payment over the phone, they will be able to recall the work crew, which will stop the shut-off.
In one instance, the victim asked for a call back number and was given 1-800-725-2525, with the suspect claiming his name was Jason
The victim noted that their Caller ID showed the caller was calling from 1-858-222-3899.

The Marshall Police Department advises against giving anyone any payment information over the phone, unless they have an established account and can verify the callers identity.

The Marshall Police Department also advises that most all City area electric customers get their electricty from the City of Marshall Electric Department. The Marshall Electric Department does not do Shut Off Notices via the telephone. They instead use the US Mail, and a Shut Off Notice affixed to the residence.
