Residential Burglaries

Tustin has recently had an increase in the number of residential burglaries occurring primarily during day time hours. It is believed many of these crimes are being conducted by suspects who are commonly known as, “Knock-knock” burglars. Knock-knock burglars often pose as solicitors who walk through neighborhoods pretending to sell such things as solar panels, magazine subscriptions, cable television service, public utility service, produce, etc. Once they knock on the door multiple times and receive no answer, the suspect(s) assume nobody is home and begin their criminal activity; generally entering through an open window at the back of the residence. Another common ploy is to knock on the door and if someone answers the suspect will ask for directions or use a ruse and ask if a fictitious person is home. They are simply trying to figure out if anyone is home inside. They will typically move to a new target if they believe someone is home.

According to South Area Commander Jeff Blair, the homes that are being targeted might come as a surprise to you. Blair said, “We reached out to the burglary task force in Los Angeles County and learned many of these burglary crews are gang members who target homes that display patriotic symbols such as the American flag, the MIA/POW flag, stickers related to the NRA or anything that advertises gun ownership. The crews are looking for firearms or other big ticket items such as jewelry, safes, electronics, and if you have a car in your driveway or garage they might even take that if they can find the keys.” It is also common for the burglars to work with female accomplices to make contact at the door.

To combat these crimes, the Tustin Police Department is asking for your assistance. If someone comes to your residence, particularly during the daytime hours and they are soliciting without the proper display of credentials or if they attempt to engage you in a random conversation, please contact the Tustin Police Department non-emergency line immediately.

The Tustin Police Department understands not all solicitors and people who come to your door are involved in criminal activity; but at least give us the opportunity to make that determination. It is important to get a good description of the subject along with a direction of travel and any involved vehicles if applicable.
