School Bus Drivers in Bicknell are Reporting Increase in Stop Arm Violations
Knox County – School bus drivers loading and unloading children along SR 67 in Bicknell are seeing stop arm violations on a weekly basis.
It’s important for motorists traveling SR 67 during the morning and afternoon commute to keep a watchful eye for school buses stopping to load or unload children. Recently, a bus driver had to honk the horn to alert children not to cross the road when she spotted a vehicle not stopping for the stop arm.
Troopers want to remind motorists they are required by law to stop and not pass a school bus when the red lights are flashing and the flashing stop arm is extended. Motorists traveling on a multiple lane highway with no concrete barrier or grassy median are required to stop in all directions when a school bus stops to load or unload children. Motorists are not required by law to stop for a school bus when they are approaching from the opposite direction and there is either a concrete barrier or a grassy median dividing the lanes.
Motorists should know that police officers don’t have to witness a stop arm violation before they can be cited for disregarding a school bus stop arm. If a school bus driver witnesses the violation and obtains a license plate number they can contact police and report the incident. Based upon what the school bus driver reports, a police officer can cite the driver for the incident. If the person who was driving the car cannot be identified, then the owner of the vehicle is responsible.
Indiana State Police will continue to collaborate with all school corporations and other law enforcement agencies to ensure all students are safe while loading or unloading from their school buses.
