A Winter Storm Warning has been issued from the National Weather Service for Portsmouth
Confidence is high that Portsmouth will receive a significant accumulation of snow with this storm. The current forecast projects 6”-8” of snow accumulation beginning after 7pm this evening, with the bulk of the snow falling between midnight and 7am tomorrow morning. There is some uncertainty with a wintery mix diminishing total snow accumulation.
We are expecting a mostly sunny day today with a high temperature near 41F and light winds of 5-8 mph. This should help with improving road conditions throughout the day. The low temperature for tonight will be around 29F with precipitation beginning around 7pm. Precipitation may be in the form of rain or snow, then changing to all snow by 10pm. The bulk of our snowfall is expected between midnight and 7am tomorrow. East wind 5-10 mph increasing to 11-16 mph after midnight. Thursday, snow is possible, mainly before 10am. The high temperature is expected around 33F. North wind 14-18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Snow accumulation after 7am should be less than 1”. Thursday night, there will be a slight chance of snow showers before 1am with no additional accumulation expected. The low temperature will be around 24F with a north wind of 10-13 mph. Friday, partly sunny with a high near 35F. North wind 8-10 mph.
Travel after 9pm could become hazardous quickly. Temperatures will be in the mid to low 30’s when the precipitation is expected to arrive. Travel early morning and throughout tomorrow will be treacherous as snow and ice is expected to accumulate on roadways. There is low concern for flooding with this event. Snow is expected to be of similar consistency as last week’s snow. Power outages related to heavy wet snow, i.e. power lines down is of low concern with this event.
