The Elizabeth River Tunnels (ERT) Project team, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will begin placing steel girders across Interstate 264 (I-264) this weekend. The girders will serve as the structural support for the ramp which will carry traffic to I-264 West from the future Martin Luther King Extension.

The work requires a complete nightly closure of I-264 East and West in Portsmouth between the Frederick Boulevard and Effingham Street exits beginning Friday evening, March 6 through Friday morning, March 13. The eastbound interstate closure will take place concurrently with the scheduled I-264 East Downtown Tunnel weekend closure. Signed detours will be in place to direct motorists around the interstate closures.

The I-264 closure schedule is as follows:
• I-264 East:
o Friday, March 6 – Monday, March 9 full weekend closure of I-264 East: Closed from 8 p.m. Friday night until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

 Motorists traveling eastbound on I-264 to Norfolk will exit the interstate at Portsmouth Boulevard and re-access the interstate via Effingham Street.
o Several interstate on-ramps connecting to I-264 East will also be closed beginning at 7 p.m. in coordination with the interstate closure:
 Portsmouth Boulevard on-ramp
 Frederick Boulevard South on-ramp
 Frederick Boulevard North on-ramp
• I-264 West:
o Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 nightly closure of I-264 West: Closed from 8 p.m. each night until 8 a.m. the following morning.
 Motorists traveling westbound on I-264 in Portsmouth will exit the interstate at Effingham Street, follow signs towards London Boulevard and re-access the interstate from Frederick Boulevard.
o Sunday, March 8 – Thursday, March 12 nightly closure of I-264 West: Closed from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.
 Motorists traveling westbound on I-264 in Portsmouth will exit the interstate at Effingham Street, travel along London Boulevard and re-access the interstate from Frederick Boulevard.
o Several interstate on-ramps connecting to I-264 West will also be closed beginning at 7 p.m. in coordination with the interstate closure:
 Bart Street on-ramp
 Effingham Street South on-ramp
 Effingham Street North on-ramp
Additional girder work over the interstate is expected to continue the week of March 16.
