On February 23, 2015, a Valdez jury found 29-year old Nicholas K. Huff guilty on sixteen separate charges, including felony kidnapping, attempted murder, and assault on a police officer, following a nearly three week trial.

In April of 2013, Huff stalked, assaulted, then kidnapped a local Valdez woman. The woman escaped and, with the help of a Good Samaritan, alerted authorities. Valdez Police Department officers and State Trooper Tony Beck responded to the scene where Huff fired on officers before shooting himself in the chest. Huff was treated at Providence Valdez Medical Center before being transported to the Matanuska-Susitna Pre-Trial Facility.

Huff's criminal convictions related to the 2013 case include felony kidnapping, felony attempted murder, felony stalking, felony misconduct involving weapons in the third degree, three counts of felony assault in the second degree, two counts of felony assault in the third degree, two counts of felony assault on a police officer, two counts of misdemeanor criminal trespass, misdemeanor violation of a domestic violence protective order, misdemeanor violating conditions of release, and misdemeanor unlawful conduct. Assistant District Attorney Eric Senta served as the prosecuting attorney on the case.

Authorities transferred Huff to the Goose Creek Correctional Center to await sentencing scheduled for May 29, 2015 in Valdez.
