Scott County Sheriff Walter reports two people were taken into custody after one man fled during a traffic stop by the Scott City Police.

BENTON, MISSOURI - Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter reports two people were taken into custody after one man fled during a traffic stop by the Scott City Police Department.

Gary Ellison Kyle (36), who states he has no permanent residence, fled from the scene and was tracked and arrested by Scott County Deputy Danny Finley and Scott City Officer Brooks Brockmire.

The Sheriff states that on Sunday, March 8th, around 11:00 a.m., the Scott City Police Department stopped a gray Chevrolet Silverado pickup occupied by two men near the intersection of Bridge Street and Daugherty Street in Scott City.

The driver was arrested, but the passenger, identified as Kyle by the Scott City Police Department, fled from the scene on foot. The police department also stated Kyle was considered dangerous.

Sheriff Walter states that he was advised that people living in the area were concerned for their safety while the search for Kyle occurred, but wanted to let everyone know that there was a considerable law enforcement response.

Sheriff Walter states that Deputy Danny Finley, Senior Deputy Matthew Scroggins, Chief Deputy Kenneth Kinder, and numerous members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to Scott City to assist with locating Kyle.

Deputy Finley observed tracks in the snow leading away from the vehicle in the direction the subject fled. The Deputy and Officer Brockmire followed the tracks to a basement window in an apparent abandoned house. The house was surrounded and Deputy Finley entered the basement through the window, locating Kyle hiding behind some plywood. The basement was dark, and Deputy Finley could not see Kyle’s hands. Kyle initially refused to cooperate and follow the orders of the Deputy. A short scuffle occurred, Officer Brockmire and a Highway Patrol Trooper entered the basement, and Kyle was taken into custody.

Sheriff Walter states that at the time of his arrest, Kyle apparently had outstanding warrants for drug charges in Cape Girardeau County and Howard County. The Sheriff states that additional drug charges are expected to be filed by the Scott City Police Department as a result of this arrest.

The Sheriff states the driver is not being identified at this time as no formal charges have been filed in this case.

Sheriff Walter cites this arrest as an example of how the law enforcement agencies involved work together for the benefit of all. The Sheriff thanks Chief David Leeman and the Scott City Police Department, and all of the members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol for working to keep the citizens of Scott County safe.

Sheriff Walter commends Deputy Finley for his contribution and arrest. The Sheriff asks that anyone who has additional information on the activities of Kyle, other drug activity, or information regarding any other criminal activity to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 545-3525, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 1-866-210-4322.
