Don’t become a victim of a Scam
Don’t become a victim of a Scam.....
The Northfield Twp Police Department continues to warn our residents and community members of the latest scams. According to the Better Business Bureau beware of callers identifying themselves as a utility representative claiming you are behind on your payment. The caller may threaten to shut your heat off, unless you pay immediately. The caller will request payment by prepaid debit cards. Do not pay this caller with a debit card or any other means. Once you transfer money onto a Pre-Paid debit card, you will be out that money.
Also, be cautious of anyone unsolicited and unknown to you willing to remove snow from your property and your roofs.
Protect yourself by discontinuing the phone call or by confirming a contractors identity. Do not call the company with a number provided by the caller.
Prepaid debit cards for payment should always be a warning sign. Most legitimate business accept checks or credit cards.
Pressure for decisions or payments should be a warning. End the conversation.
Finally, if you receive an email regarding a background check and you have not applied for a new job or a new position that would require such a check, do not let your curiosity get the best of you. Opening such a message or a link you have been directed to may infect your computer with malware.
