Two Off-Duty Troopers Respond to Two-Vehicle Crash, Husband and Wife Injured

Posey County –Monday afternoon at approximately 4:10, two off-duty Indiana State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on SR 66 at SR 165 that injured a Poseyville couple. Both troopers were less than one-mile from the crash site when they overhead the call on the radio.

Preliminary investigation revealed Maxine Hempfling, 80, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer westbound on SR 66 when she disregarded the stop sign at SR 165 and collided into a trailer that was being pulled through the intersection by a 2006 Toyota Tundra. The driver of the Toyota, George Whiteman, 50, of  Puryear, TN, was traveling southbound on SR 165 and was in the process of turning east onto SR 66 when the collision occurred.  According to Senior Trooper Kylen Compton, the driver disregarded the stop sign because she fell asleep. Maxine and her husband, Charles Hempfling, 80, were taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where they are currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. “Everyone was wearing their seat belts, which no doubt reduced the extent of their injuries,” said Compton.  Whiteman was not injured.  Hempfling’s Chevrolet Blazer was totaled. Whiteman’s Toyota received minor damage, but the trailer was extensively damaged.

Investigating Officer: Senior Trooper Kylen Compton, Indiana State Police
