Advisory

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

PSE&G has notified The Borough of Westwood that important maintenance work must be completed on the underground electrical systems in and around our Central Business District. The work will utilize a crane used to replace underground transformers and will cause a section of roadway to be closed during the work. PSE&G will complete this project in two phases. Weather permitting; work is scheduled for Monday March 16, on phase one, and Monday March 23 for phase two. In the event that the work is not completed, they may work the Tuesday for each phase on March 17 and March 24.

On March 16, and possibly March 17, 2015, the work will begin at 9:00 AM and run to 8:00 PM. During this phase, there will be no parking along Westwood Avenue from Broadway to Fairview Avenue. There will be one lane of traffic allowed to pass based upon where the final equipment setup is needed to be based upon the direction of the on site supervisor. Traffic on Center Avenue and Fairview will be open in both directions.

On March 23, and possibly March 24, 2015, The work will begin at 9:00am and run to 8:00pm. During this time, Fairview Avenue and Center Avenue will be closed in both directions from Westwood Avenue to the entrance of the Center Avenue business complex. Westwood Avenue at Broadway will have 2 spots marked as No Parking, but will all lanes of travel will be open. A small area in front of the Westwood Gallery will be coned off to accommodate work at that location. Washington Avenue westbound will be closed from Broadway to Third Avenue because of the placement of the crane. The eastbound lanes of travel will be open on Washington Avenue.

The Energy Strong gas main work is scheduled to continue on March 18th at the intersection of Lake Street and Broadway heading northbound into Hillsdale. During the work, the detour route will re-route traffic from Broadway toward Kinderkamack Road on both sides of the work zone. Traffic detours, signage and police officers directing traffic will be staffed at Broadway and Lake Street, Lake Street and Kinderkamack Road, Kinderkamack Road and Lawrence Street (Hillsdale) and Lawrence Street and Broadway (Hillsdale). Vehicles will be permitted to enter the closed road area to access businesses along the Broadway corridor provided they check in with the stationed police officer and receive directions about the safest route to enter the work area to get to their destination. Once completed on Broadway, the work on Kinderkamack Road will commence. Work will go from Maple Avenue northbound into Hillsdale. The same detour route listed above will be used. Work on Broadway will be conducted on March 18th and 19th and Kinderkamack will be completed on March 20th, 2015.

Subsequent to the gas main installation will be the installation of individual building services scheduled at the convenience of property owners. The full schedule for this work is not complete however; it will be communicated to affected parties when completed. Gas services work will commence on country roads (location to be determined) on March 25, 26, 27, 30 & 31, 2015. There will then be a break until after April 5, 2015. After April 5th, 2015, the service work will continue.

NJ Transit bus service will follow the detour routes and pick up services will not be affected by the construction work.

The Borough of Westwood and PSE&G are in the initial discussions about the paving operations for the Energy Strong Project. It is anticipated that the Street Paving will be completed during the calendar year 2015. Weather plays a big role in the scheduling of this component of the project. Once a schedule is finalized, the paving schedule will be communicated.

For further information about this project, or to report a problem, please call the Police Department at 201-664-7000.
