In recent weeks, various residents have called the Livermore Police Department to inquire about our drug take back policy. As of September 8, 2014 the Drug Enforcement Agency has informed the public regarding a new ruling (AB 1442), directly related to the disposal of pharmaceutical controlled substances. Federal rulings can be complicated; therefore in an effort to provide some clarity, the Livermore Police Department would like to provide the following helpful insights.
To begin, the Livermore Police Department does not conduct a drug take back on a daily basis. Prior to AB 1442, with the assistance of the DEA, the Livermore Police Department would conduct very specific drug take back days. However, as of this recent ruling (AB 1442), this will no longer be the case.
AB 1442 enables select locations to establish themselves as drug take back locations, provided they establish the appropriate collection receptacle. Given recent case law, there are no collection receptacles located in the City of Livermore.
The Livermore Police Department would like to provide some guidelines to all Livermore residents who may be in need of assistance with the disposal of their controlled substances. In order to provide the most accurate information, the Livermore Police Department suggests that our residents contact the DEA’s Registration Call Center at 1-800-882-9539. The listed number will provide members of the public with the most accurate information regarding the nearest collection receptacle for the disposal of pharmaceutical controlled substances.
